Watch Out For Snakes is 8-bit synthwave from Atlanta geek Matt Baum. Layering NES and Atari chip samples, WOFS creates darkly energetic tracks that pay homage to old video games and 80’s films without taking itself too seriously.

Background Edit

For most of the synthwave community, horror is synonymous with John Carpenter. For Watch Out For Snakes, horror is synonymous with blowing into the bottom of a Contra Nintendo cartridge for the third time and still not getting the game to start up.

Since the early 2000s, Baum has been experimenting with minimal synth and sporting a keytar in various Central Florida and Atlanta outfits, but it wasn’t until 2012 that Watch Out For Snakes was born.

Unable to choose between playing music or playing video games, Watch Out For Snakes split the difference, sampling the old NES and Atari systems of Baum's youth and synthesizing these samples to build a unique sound – part synthwave, part chiptune, all retro.

WOFS crafts original material that draws influence from artists such as Vangelis, Depeche Mode, Sparks, SURVIVE, and College, but also covers soundtracks from NES games like Ninja Gaiden and Mike Tyson’s Punchout!!
